Commonly known as white fillings, these are tooth-colored aesthetic fillings. They are made from composite resin-based materials. While in a malleable form, they are placed on the tooth and then hardened using a halogen or LED light source. They bond chemically to the tooth. A well-performed composite filling is often difficult to detect.
What is composite resin?
Resins that can bond to enamel and dentin tissues using adhesive systems were first developed in 1962. Although these systems have undergone some structural changes over the years, they have persisted to the present day, and developments continue.
Durability of Composite Fillings
With advancing technology, the durability of the composite fillings we use has been increased. After the decay is removed, the composite material chemically bonds to the remaining tooth structure, making the tooth more resistant to fractures.
How Long Do Composite Fillings Last?
Although their longevity can vary depending on the chosen material, application precision, the patient’s oral hygiene, and dietary habits, composite fillings generally provide long-term service in the mouth.
Other Frequently Asked Questions and Answers About Composite Fillings
Can composite fillings be used in all tooth cavities?
Composite fillings are more ideal for small to medium cavities. However, for teeth with extensive loss of tooth structure, it is more appropriate to present alternative treatment options to the patient.
How is a composite filling procedure done?
Before placing a composite filling, the tooth surface is thoroughly cleaned. To increase the bonding surface, a beveling procedure is performed. Cotton rolls are placed around the tooth or the tooth is isolated with a rubber dam. A bonding agent is applied between the tooth and the composite filling to ensure adhesion. The bonding is then light-cured and hardened. Next, the composite filling is applied in thin layers and light-cured. This process is repeated until the cavity is completely filled.
Can composite fillings be applied to every tooth?
Composite fillings can be used on both front and back teeth. In front teeth, they are used as a filling material for decayed, fractured, or worn teeth, to improve the appearance of discolored teeth, and to close gaps between teeth (diastema). In back teeth, they are also used because they can withstand chewing pressures.
What are the advantages of composite fillings?
The biggest advantage of composite fillings is their aesthetic appearance, as they match the color of the tooth. Polishing can be done immediately after the filling is placed. They look natural and aesthetic, do not cause any allergic reactions, and are compatible with oral tissues.
What are the disadvantages of composite fillings?
They may cause temporary sensitivity in the teeth. Beverages such as cola, tea, alcohol, and smoking can lead to discoloration of composite fillings.
Does a composite filling cause pain?
Pain is not expected after a filling. The patient may feel discomfort while chewing on the tooth only if there is a high spot in the filling. Once the high spot is adjusted, the pain disappears. Sensitivity may occur depending on the depth of the cavity, but this usually decreases gradually and disappears within 1–2 weeks.
