Digital Dentistry Applications

What Is Digital Dentistry?

One of the technological developments increasingly used in healthcare is digital dentistry.

Thanks to systems that began to be developed in the 1980s, dental restorations can now be completed within just a few hours.

Highly compatible and aesthetic restorations are designed and produced using digital impressions taken from inside the mouth with a special intraoral camera.

How Do CAD/CAM Systems Work?

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) systems are dentistry-specific software technologies that operate with three-dimensional modeling systems.

Images obtained through intraoral cameras are processed in computer software. Once the design is completed, it is sent to a milling unit (milling machine).

As a result of this process, highly aesthetic and durable restorations are produced from ceramic blocks.

The following types of restorations can be performed using CAD/CAM systems:

  • Laminate veneers
  • Inlay/onlay restorations
  • Aesthetic full ceramic crowns
  • Implant-supported fixed prostheses

Treatment Duration in Digital Systems

CAD/CAM systems provide a major advantage by reducing treatment times.

In a clinical setting, most procedures can be completed in a single appointment, and treatment may be finished within a few hours.

The duration may vary depending on the type of procedure performed and the number of teeth involved.

Replacing traditional impression methods with digital impressions contributes both to faster procedures and greater patient comfort.

In addition, digital impressions completely eliminate discomforts experienced during conventional impressions, such as the gag reflex.
