  2. Bonding Procedure (Adhesive System)

The bonding application is a cosmetic procedure used to correct tooth shape irregularities and close gaps between teeth.

The word bonding means “to bond” or “to adhere” in English. In a bonding procedure, the dentist applies a composite filling material in the shade most suitable for your tooth color to the tooth using special adhesive systems. During this procedure, no irreversible damage is done to the tooth. The composite material can be removed at any time without harming the tooth. In most cases, the material is applied directly onto the tooth without any tooth reduction.

How is the bonding procedure performed?

During the bonding procedure, first a material that matches the tooth color is selected, and then the tooth is prepared. To ensure adhesion of the filling to the tooth, the tooth structure is coated with a suitable bonding material. A tooth-colored composite is applied to the tooth and hardened with visible light. After placement, the tooth is shaped and polished.

Does bonding cause tooth discoloration?

Bonding is often preferred as an alternative to porcelain laminate veneers because it is much more economical and can be completed in a single session. For patients selected for bonding treatment, it is preferable that they do not consume tea, coffee, or cigarettes, as such substances may cause discoloration of the teeth. However, these color changes can be easily restored with polishing procedures performed every 5–6 months.

Can bonding be applied to everyone?

Bonding treatment can be applied to people of all ages. It is commonly used to treat fractures seen in childhood and to close gaps that may develop between teeth as age progresses. At more advanced ages, tooth wear and cracks may occur, and bonding is applied to treat such cases.

What precautions should be taken after bonding?

After bonding treatment, the patient can continue daily life immediately after leaving the clinic. Since the material is hardened instantly with light, there is no problem with eating or drinking, and no waiting period is required. Any fracture that may occur in the bonded area can be repaired immediately.

Is bonding more expensive than other procedures? Why is it recommended?

It is somewhat more expensive than a traditional filling; however, among aesthetic restorations, it is much more affordable compared to porcelain laminate veneers. It is preferred because it can be completed in a shorter time and in a single session compared to other aesthetic treatments.
