These types of tooth discoloration occur due to the rupture of capillaries in the coronal part of the tooth after severe trauma and the penetration of blood cells into the dentin tubules, causing discoloration due to the Fe-sulfide (iron sulfide) they contain.

In rare cases, when the tooth is still vital, the color may spontaneously return to normal. However, if the tooth is necrotic, there is no color improvement. In this case, the tooth is whitened using whitening agents applied to the pulp chamber following root canal treatment.
