In-Office Teeth Whitening

In-office teeth whitening is a method performed by a dentist in a clinical setting that provides faster and more effective whitening results. The gums are isolated with protective materials, and high-concentration whitening chemical agents are applied to the teeth. Some whitening agents are activated by light, while others work effectively without the need for light, and the teeth whitening (bleaching) procedure is carried out. Special light devices and laser systems cannot achieve whitening on their own; their role is to activate the whitening agents applied to the teeth.

In-office teeth whitening is performed in two 30-minute sessions and takes approximately one hour in total. It is a safe procedure and does not damage the tooth enamel. However, individuals with enamel wear or cracks in their teeth may experience tooth sensitivity. These complaints can be eliminated with fluoride applications. If the patient has a low pain threshold, the use of a pain reliever is recommended on the first day.

During the teeth whitening process, staining foods and beverages such as tea, coffee, cigarettes, cola, and red wine should be avoided for at least 15 days. To ensure long-lasting whitening results, patients are expected to minimize the consumption of colored foods and drinks as much as possible.

Recent studies recommend continuing with at-home teeth whitening methods as a supportive treatment after in-office teeth whitening (combined therapy) in order to ensure long-lasting whitening results.

Is Teeth Whitening Harmful?

During the teeth whitening process, tooth-staining foods and beverages such as tea, coffee, cigarettes, cola, and red wine should be avoided for at least 15 days. In order to ensure long-lasting whitening results, patients are expected to consume colored foods and drinks as little as possible.

Does Teeth Whitening Cause Sensitivity?

After the whitening procedure, sensitivity may occur especially in the lower front teeth; however, this is temporary. If there are cavities, cracks, or fractures in the teeth, these areas should be temporarily restored before whitening. Permanent restorations should be performed 15 days after the whitening procedure.

In our clinic, we use internationally recognized whitening agents that meet global standards, such as Opalescence products by Ultradent, BioWhiten – Biological Teeth Whitening products, and FGM Whiteness products. The same brand is preferred for both in-office and at-home whitening procedures. Additionally, whitening systems such as Philips Zoom and Fläsh are also frequently used methods.

How Long Does In-Office Teeth Whitening Last?

After a teeth whitening procedure, the longevity of the results depends on how carefully the individual maintains oral hygiene and care. In general, the whitening effect can last between 2 and 3 years.

Diet After Teeth Whitening

During the first 15 days, colored foods and beverages such as tea, coffee, cola, cherry juice, red wine, and heavily tomato-based dishes should be avoided, and smoking should be strictly avoided. Teeth should be brushed regularly at least twice a day.
