Implant treatment is a method used to restore missing teeth in individuals with tooth loss. Dental implant procedures are performed in two stages. The first stage involves placing a titanium screw called an implant into the jawbone at the site of the missing tooth. The time required for the implant to integrate with the bone (osseointegration) varies between 1–3 months, depending on the brand and characteristics of the implant used. In the second stage, prosthetic teeth called zirconium or metal-supported porcelain veneer crowns, which are compatible with the structure of your mouth and other teeth, are placed on this ossified area. While making the prostheses, two methods are commonly used: the cementation (bonding) method and the screwing method. The method most suitable for the patient’s mouth is chosen.
This method, applied without disrupting your daily life, eliminates the need to place a bridge or put pressure on your other teeth, while also providing a longer-lasting and healthier tooth. Additionally, your dental aesthetics are enhanced, allowing you to smile more comfortably without worry.
Can Implants Be Done at Any Age?
Implant treatment can be performed on patients with missing teeth or those who have difficulty using removable dentures, provided their overall health condition allows it. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes, serious bone disorders, high blood pressure, or other systemic health issues should definitely consult their doctors before undergoing implant treatment. Apart from these conditions, for patients without serious health problems, a general oral examination, a panoramic X-ray, a jaw X-ray, and, if necessary, 3D imaging can be taken to ensure suitability. These evaluations determine whether the patient is eligible for implant treatment.
Are There Any Health Risks of Dental Implants?
Damage caused by bacteria in the mouth: If a patient receiving an implant experiences problems such as gum recession, the roots of the dental implant may become exposed. In this case, bacteria can accumulate in the area and infection may develop over time. If this progresses, the implant in the jawbone may be lost. Therefore, patients must maintain proper oral hygiene and care for their implants as they would their natural teeth.
Damage from infection and inflammation: Sometimes, inflammation and infection can develop around the implant placed in the mouth. This usually occurs in people who do not pay attention to oral hygiene. Viruses can also contribute to these problems. This issue is more common in smokers and diabetic patients.
Rejection of the implant by the body: Rarely, the immune system may not accept the implant. This is more frequently observed in smokers. It can also occur in individuals with titanium allergies or those who grind their teeth.
Nerve-related issues: During the placement of the implant, local anesthesia may cause nerve damage in some patients. This can lead to numbness and pain in the gums. Patients may experience difficulties while eating, speaking, or shaving. Therefore, it is important to carefully choose the dentist performing the implant treatment.
If there is a titanium allergy: Although titanium is tissue- and bone-friendly, some individuals may have a titanium allergy. In such cases, the implant may need to be removed. This is more likely in patients with immune system problems.
Yellow Nail Syndrome: In some patients, the implant may cause a condition called yellow nail syndrome. In these cases, removing the implant can prevent the problem.
One of the most frequently asked questions about implant procedures is whether pain occurs after getting an implant.
This varies depending on how correctly and properly the procedure is performed. Pain rarely occurs during the first stage of the implant. The pain referred to here is not severe but rather mild. Since implant placement causes minor trauma to the jawbone, some pain is expected. However, to minimize this, the implantologist prescribes painkillers alongside antibiotics. Antibiotics are used to help the surgical site resist microorganisms, as the mouth contains many bacteria.
In addition to these measures, the patient must maintain proper oral hygiene and care. Otherwise, pain is inevitable. Besides pain, swelling may also occur in the area. In such cases, applying an ice compress to the region helps minimize the swelling. It is recommended that during the first 2 hours after the implant procedure, an ice compress be applied externally to the implant area for 5–6 minutes every 20 minutes. This practice helps reduce swelling to a minimum.
After an implant operation, you should pay close attention to your eating and drinking habits and follow your dentist’s recommendations. Unless otherwise instructed, avoid very cold or very hot foods. Soft foods at room temperature should be consumed.
The 2017 dental implant prices vary depending on the type and brand of implant used for the procedure. In addition to leading brands such as Nobel Biocare (Brånemark) – Sweden, ITI (Straumann) – Switzerland, Astra Tech – Sweden, and Bego – Germany, there are more than 300 implant brands available on the market. Prices vary depending on the implant brand used and the type of prosthesis applied on top of the implant.
