Covering teeth with crown materials is a procedure in which teeth are capped with tooth-shaped materials to protect teeth that have suffered excessive substance loss for various reasons. This procedure does not harm the tooth; on the contrary, it extends the tooth’s lifespan.

Crown

A crown is applied for substance loss and aesthetic problems affecting a single tooth. An impression is taken from the tooth and sent to a technician. On the model, the technician first prepares a metal framework to provide strength, and then covers it with a porcelain (or, less commonly now, acrylic) layer to achieve aesthetics.

Which teeth are crowns applied to?

  • Teeth with excessive substance loss due to decay or other reasons

  • Discolored teeth whose color cannot be restored

  • Teeth with shape deformities

  • Weak teeth that have undergone root canal treatment (to prevent fractures)

  • Teeth placed on implants

Types of Crowns

Laminate Crown

In anterior teeth, color changes, positional, structural, or shape abnormalities, or existing gaps between teeth can cause aesthetic problems. A Laminate Crown is a prosthetic approach applied only to the front surface of the tooth, within the enamel boundaries, with minimal preparation. Thanks to recent advancements in filling materials and bonding techniques, laminate applications can also be performed using composite filling materials. However, in cases of teeth grinding, deep bite, insufficient crown height, or enamel thickness, the traditional full crown approach should be preferred.

Full Ceramic Crown

In anterior teeth, the disadvantage of the opaque reflection caused by the metal underneath has been overcome with advancing technology, bringing forward Full Ceramic Crown applications, which are made entirely of porcelain without any metal support.

Telescopic Crown

When teeth are excessively crooked, misaligned, or elongated, creating incompatibility with the area planned for a prosthesis, instead of removing these teeth, they can be shortened and fitted with telescopic crowns—interlocking crowns—or precision attachments.
