Gum recession occurs as a result of gum diseases, incorrect tooth brushing techniques, and certain parafunctional habits such as teeth grinding or biting hard objects. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth decay.
It is a condition that arises when the gum tissue moves toward the root surface. It can affect individuals of all age groups. Gum recession can occur in the presence of gum disease, but it can also develop in healthy gums due to excessive forces.
In diseases like periodontitis, which affect all the tissues surrounding the tooth, the gum can recede as the bone surrounding the tooth root resorbs.
Using a hard toothbrush, brushing traumatically, applying excessive force during orthodontic treatment, poorly finished restorations or dental fillings, and teeth grinding can also cause gum recession.
Gum recession does not always require treatment.
When treatment is needed, gum tissue taken from an appropriate area in the mouth is usually placed over the recession site (gum grafts). It can also be performed surgically using ready-made materials that can transform into gum tissue. Gum recession can cause tooth sensitivity. In such cases, sensitivity-reducing treatments can be applied without intervening in the recession itself.
Surgical procedures for gum recession are performed under local anesthesia. Recovery is largely completed within one week after the operation, with final results usually appearing after the fourth week.
