  1. Unhealthy Gums: In a normally healthy individual, gums should be light pink (orange-peel color). When a person neglects gum health or has poor oral hygiene, inflammation, overgrowth, and bleeding can occur in the gums. Such conditions can significantly affect a person’s aesthetics. If the individual cannot manage this on their own, they should see a dentist. After diagnosing the issue, the dentist applies the necessary treatment, allowing the person to regain their original aesthetic gums.
  2. Gummy Smile (Smiling with Gums): When gums are excessively visible while smiling, this is generally called a gummy smile. If the cause is that the gums cover too much of the teeth, minor interventions on the gums can correct the situation by reshaping them. However, if the cause is due to excessive vertical growth of the upper jaw, overly strong lip muscles, or a short upper lip, different interventions are required, as procedures on the gums alone will not resolve the issue. In such cases, it is necessary to prevent the upper lip from being lifted too much during smiling.
  3. Gum Recession: Gum recession is one of the most common dental problems. It can occur for two main reasons: either due to periodontitis, where gum inflammation spreads to deeper tissues such as bone and root surfaces, or as a result of excessive or incorrect brushing. Additionally, parafunctional habits—such as teeth grinding or pencil chewing—can also contribute.

The complaints patients usually report are tooth sensitivity and aesthetic concerns. If sensitivity is present, it can be treated using chemical agents, such as desensitizing toothpastes or clinical chemical treatments applied to the root surface. Aesthetic issues, if not widespread, can often be resolved through minor surgical procedures.

  4. Gum Pigmentation: Pigmentation refers to dark spots or discoloration on the gums. It can be related to skin tone, being more common in people with darker skin. Additionally, smokers often exhibit more gum pigmentation. There are several methods to remove it: laser treatment, cryotherapy (freezing method), or air-polishing/spraying techniques.
  5. Uneven Gum Margins: In some individuals, uneven gum margins can cause aesthetic concerns. In such cases, the gum line around the teeth may be too high or may cover more of the tooth crown than necessary. In these situations, appropriate treatments are applied to improve the aesthetics.
