Dental tomography is a radiological diagnostic method that uses X-rays to create cross-sectional images of the area to be examined.

Panoramic radiographs have long been used for diagnosis and treatment planning. However, 2-dimensional panoramic radiographs are insufficient when evaluations in the third dimension are required.

While measurements on panoramic films may have deviations of 3.0 mm – 7.5 mm, measurements on tomography are reduced to 0.2 mm – 0.5 mm. This allows for more accurate calculations before important surgical operations, thereby reducing the risk of complications.

Applications of Dental Tomography:

  • Implant planning (determining bone thickness and height)

  • Exact localization of anatomical structures adjacent to planned surgical areas

  • Planning of impacted third molar (wisdom tooth) surgery

  • Imaging of cysts in the jaw

  • Trauma cases

  • Visualization of root canals

  • Detection of bone and root fractures

Advantages of Dental Tomography:

  • Imaging areas not visible in panoramic and periapical X-rays

  • More detailed diagnosis

  • More accurate treatment planning with reduced risk of complications

  • More detailed examination and measurements of soft and bone tissues
