Wisdom teeth usually begin to emerge between the ages of 15 and 25. However, when there isn’t enough space in the jaws for these teeth, they may fail to erupt completely and remain impacted or partially impacted beneath the gums or within the jawbone.
Why should they be removed?
A partially erupted wisdom tooth often leads to infection and crowding of the surrounding teeth. In more advanced cases, the sac surrounding the impacted tooth may transform into a cyst, causing resorption of the jawbone.
At this stage, if left untreated, cyst-related lesions may develop into tumorous formations that require more complex surgical procedures.
Should wisdom teeth that do not cause discomfort also be removed?
It is impossible to predict whether an impacted wisdom tooth will cause problems in the future. However, once issues arise, treatment tends to be more painful and complicated than in symptom-free cases. The most common problems caused by infection around an impacted wisdom tooth include pain, swelling at the corner of the jaw, limited mouth opening, and difficulty swallowing.
