Does Root Canal Treatment Cause Pain?
Root canal treatment is a procedure that requires patience and dedication from both the dentist and the patient. When deemed necessary, your dentist will administer anesthesia to the tooth and surrounding area before the procedure. The resulting numbness ensures that the patient feels no pain.
Does Every Tooth Have a Different Number of Canals?
Incisors and canines in the front of the mouth generally have 1 root. Small premolars on the sides usually have 1–2 roots. Large molars in the back of the mouth generally have 3 roots and 3 or 4 canals.
How Is Root Canal Treatment Performed and How Long Does It Take?
*The purpose of filling the root canals is to hermetically seal the canal space, creating a barrier against microorganisms and tissue fluids. This allows the tooth to remain successfully in the mouth even though it is no longer vital.
*Root canal treatment is usually completed in a single session, depending on the condition of the tooth and the dentist’s decision. However, in teeth with infection, the treatment may require multiple sessions.
*The cost of root canal treatment varies according to the number of canals and the condition of the infection. You can have a free consultation at our clinic for pricing information.
Is pain felt after root canal treatment?
After the treatment, mild pain and sensitivity in the tooth may occur, but this is temporary. The best approach is to avoid using the side of the mouth with the treated tooth for a few days or to take an anti-inflammatory medication. Sensitivity will usually disappear shortly afterward.
How can I tell if a root canal treatment has failed?
The success rate of properly performed root canal treatments is between 90–95%. A root canal treatment may fail if pulp tissue remains inside the roots (for example, due to an untreated or missed canal), if the root canal filling is inadequate, if microorganisms leak into the canal, if perforation occurs during the procedure, or if cracks develop between the roots. After a failed root canal, pain is often experienced while biting or spontaneously.
Can a root canal treatment be redone?
In most cases, a solution is achieved by retreating the root canal, correcting any existing errors if present. The old root canal filling is removed, the tooth canal is reshaped and cleaned, and then refilled.
If this procedure does not yield results, a surgical intervention called apicoectomy is performed. During this procedure, the tooth root is accessed; the area and its surroundings are surgically cleaned and sealed. If the surgical intervention also fails to resolve the issue, extraction of the tooth may be considered appropriate.
If root canal treatment is not performed, progressing decay can cause greater damage to the tooth pulp and surrounding tissues. This may result in tooth fractures and infections in the surrounding tissues, and if the problem progresses further, the tooth may be lost.
The cost of root canal treatment varies depending on the number of canals in the tooth and the condition of the infection. For pricing information, you can schedule a free consultation at our clinic.
