Root canal treatment in children is a very sensitive topic. Contrary to common belief, primary (milk) teeth also have roots like permanent teeth. However, these roots are resorbed by the erupting permanent teeth underneath, and milk teeth naturally fall out when the time comes. Therefore, it is very important for primary teeth to remain in the mouth during this process.
Does root canal treatment on a milk tooth harm the permanent tooth underneath?
Since primary teeth are independent from the permanent teeth beneath them, their treatment is also performed independently. In cases of advanced decay, nighttime pain, sensitivity to heat, pain while eating, or swelling, root canal treatment may be necessary for primary teeth. If a tooth is lost prematurely, it may later need to be corrected with more difficult and costly orthodontic treatment.
Root Canal Treatment in Teeth with Open Apex
While closure of the root apex can be achieved over a period of 1–2 years through follow-ups and dressings every 1, 3, or 6 months, in non-vital teeth, regenerative endodontics can provide successful results within approximately 3 weeks, followed by 6-month follow-ups.
Root Canal Treatment in Permanent Teeth
Root canal treatment in permanent teeth depends on whether the root apex is closed or not, which is related to the patient’s age. After teeth erupt in the mouth, root development continues for about 3 years. In teeth with fully developed roots, treatment is similar to that in adult patients. However, in teeth with open apices, the treatment process is different. First, the root apex must be closed, and then the root canal treatment is completed.
How long does root canal treatment take?
Root canal treatment in children is much shorter and, contrary to popular belief, simpler. It is not as long or as complicated as in adults.
Why is root canal treatment performed on milk teeth?
Primary teeth serve as guides for permanent teeth; therefore, their care is very important. As long as they do not harm the underlying permanent teeth, primary teeth should be preserved in the mouth. To extend their lifespan, root canal treatment may be necessary when required.
