  2. Age Limit in Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic (braces) treatment is the branch of dentistry that evaluates all disorders related to the jaw, mouth, and teeth structure in individuals of all ages. It encompasses all interventions aimed at achieving a proper and healthy oral and dental structure.

Whether you need orthodontic treatment is determined by specialists in this field—orthodontists.

The need for orthodontic treatment can be assessed through a detailed oral and dental examination, evaluation of the jaw, taking specific X-rays (panoramic and cephalometric X-rays, etc.), and special photography methods.

In other words, orthodontic treatment can be applied to anyone with healthy teeth and supporting jawbones.

Many adults who did not receive orthodontic treatment during childhood can now benefit from this service at any desired age. Thanks to advanced technology, small, transparent, and nearly invisible brackets can be used, and if desired, brackets can also be attached to the back surfaces of the teeth. Moreover, modern advanced surgical methods allow correction of jaw and facial bone issues even in adults

Orthodontic Treatment by Age Group

Children’s Orthodontics:
In most of our patients, treatments last an average of 1.5 years and usually start around the time when all permanent teeth have erupted. However, in some cases, treatment may begin as early as the eruption of the 6-year molars. In such cases, where growth and development need to be monitored, long-term orthodontic treatment may include periods of observation between active treatment phases.

Adult Orthodontics:
In many adult patients, orthodontic treatments are carried out over a very short period (1–3 months) to achieve the best aesthetics before aesthetic-prosthetic procedures. Routine orthodontic treatments for adults usually last around 1.5 years.

Jaw Corrections in Adults:
For adult patients, resolving problems related to the jaw bones (for example, an excessively protruding lower jaw) may require the support of surgical specialties. However, even in these cases, treatment can generally be completed within 1.5–2 years. During the orthodontic treatment process, at an appropriate stage determined by your orthodontist, a maxillofacial surgeon performs an operation under general anesthesia to correct the misalignment of the jawbone. After jaw surgery, patients usually require about a one-week recovery period.

Treatment Options:
Your orthodontist will explain the treatment options, including their advantages and disadvantages, and guide you based on their knowledge and experience. The treatment plan is implemented according to the patient’s desires and expectations in combination with the doctor’s professional advice.
