What is Orthodontic Treatment?

  2. What is Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontics, commonly known as braces treatment, involves the correction of dental irregularities that occur at an early age or are seen later in life due to delayed treatment.

Orthodontic treatment typically begins around the ages of 9–14. However, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children see an orthodontist before the age of 7 to monitor the development of baby teeth and their transition to permanent teeth. This allows potential orthodontic problems to be diagnosed earlier and addressed more easily.

What Methods Are Used?

Orthodontic treatments generally proceed by attaching brackets to the surfaces of the teeth. There are many types of brackets, including metal brackets, ceramic brackets, sapphire (ice) brackets, Invisalign, Damon (self-ligating) metal brackets, Damon (self-ligating) clear brackets, and lingual brackets. The type of brackets used varies depending on the specific treatment plan and the patient’s budget.

How Should Oral and Dental Care Be Performed During Orthodontic Treatment?

One of the most important aspects of orthodontic treatment is maintaining regular oral and dental hygiene. Teeth should be brushed after every meal. Food particles that can get stuck between brackets must also be cleaned thoroughly. If not removed, leftover food can negatively affect your oral and dental health.

Additionally, in certain cases, the use of orthodontic elastics is required. However, these elastics can promote the accumulation of bacteria and microorganisms in the mouth, potentially harming both your teeth and gums. The only way to prevent this is by paying close attention to your oral hygiene.

Choosing the right toothbrush is also very important. Unless your orthodontist recommends a special type, you can clean your teeth comfortably with a medium-bristled toothbrush. Brushing time will be longer due to the brackets on your teeth, and it should generally take around 3–5 minutes.

How Is Pricing Determined in Orthodontic (Braces) Treatment?

The cost of braces varies depending on the treatment method, the type of brackets used, and the procedures to be performed in the mouth. In these cases, the patient and the orthodontist make a joint decision on the treatment plan. Although the initial cost may seem high, this treatment is very important for maintaining oral and dental health and preventing potential problems in the future.
