Headgear: It is frequently used in orthodontic treatment. The headgear appliance consists of three parts.

Facebow: It is a part of the headgear appliance.

The facebow has an intraoral arm attached to the tube of the upper first molar and an extraoral arm connected to the force element of the headgear.

The headgear appliance is used:

  • To restrain the growth of the upper jaw in cases where it is protrusive,
  • To create space for crowded or protruding front teeth by moving the back teeth backward,

  • To neutralize or counteract forces on the back teeth when their movement is not desired.

Initially, your headgear may look a little unusual or strange to you and those around you. However, it is necessary for your orthodontic treatment and is frequently used in orthodontics.

Precautions When Using Headgear:

  • Wear your headgear for at least the number of hours prescribed by your orthodontist. Remember, the appliance is effective only if used for the recommended duration.

  • Always remove the neck or head strap first, then the facebow. Otherwise, your cheeks, lips, or face may get injured.

  • Remove your headgear before playing rough games or doing sports.

  • Bring your headgear with you to every appointment.

  • Prevent others from bumping into your headgear. Sometimes siblings or friends may not realize the seriousness of the treatment.

You may experience some discomfort in your teeth 3–5 hours after wearing the headgear. Do not stop wearing it because of this discomfort, as it will subside with regular use.
