  • At the first appointment, cephalometric and panoramic X-rays are taken from the patient. Starting treatment without X-rays is absolutely incorrect. X-rays can reveal conditions that are not visible in the mouth but could completely change the treatment plan. Photos and plaster models documenting the patient’s initial state are also taken. The treatment plan is created based on analyses of these records.

  • During the next 1-2 appointments, the planned procedures are carried out, and the patient receives braces or other selected orthodontic devices. This marks the start of treatment. Depending on the type of procedure, follow-up appointments are scheduled every 3 to 10 weeks. Adjustments and activations of the braces are made. This process continues throughout the pre-determined treatment period. The patient must strictly follow the doctor’s instructions, making this a treatment that requires cooperation between the family, patient, and doctor.

  • Typically, no pain is felt when braces are applied. However, the orthodontist will use a cheek retractor, and the mouth must remain open for a long time, sitting in the chair with a saliva suction device. This may cause a dry mouth sensation and tension in the cheeks. But the placement of the braces itself is not painful.

  • Orthodontic procedures are generally bloodless. However, in very limited cases, bleeding may occur during treatment. First, if your doctor places a mini screw for orthodontic purposes, there may be bleeding at the screw site. Second, if the doctor needs to slightly cut the gum to place a bracket, minor bleeding may occur. Other than these situations, bleeding does not occur during orthodontic treatment.

  • The outcome depends on the doctor’s knowledge and care, as well as the patient’s cooperation. If all these factors are in place, treatment success is 100%. After the braces are removed, a retention device is applied to hold the teeth in their new positions. The type of device is selected by the doctor based on the patient’s initial and final situation. Retainers can include clear aligners, a mouthguard-style device, removable palatal appliances, or a thin wire bonded on the inner side. The ideal retention period should be about half of the active treatment duration.

  • While some cases require minimal retention, others may require a prolonged retention period. Retainers are gradually discontinued; treatment is never abruptly stopped.
