Orthodontic Treatment Duration

  2. Orthodontic Treatment Duration

The duration of orthodontic treatment varies for each patient. It can differ not only from patient to patient but also from one orthodontist to another.

In general, orthodontic treatment is a long-term process. Some bite misalignments can be corrected in a single phase of treatment, while others may require two or three phases to achieve proper alignment. Simple orthodontic issues can be resolved with a treatment plan lasting a few months, whereas more complex cases can take 1.5 to 2 years, depending on the type of problem.

In some cases, minor tooth rotations can be corrected easily. Treatments involving the closure of large gaps or correction of jaw misalignments take longer. Typically, treatment duration for younger patients can be shortened using special appliances without waiting for the permanent teeth to fully erupt.

FACTORS AFFECTING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT DURATION

The duration of orthodontic treatment can be influenced by:

  • The patient’s age

  • Jaw structure

  • Oral structure

  • Tooth alignment

  • The position of teeth relative to each other

On average, treatments last about 1.5 years—but don’t think of this as unbearable!

Isn’t it worth enduring this period to have a smile you’ll be proud of and others will envy? 🙂

In adults, it is possible to complete treatment of visible crowding in the front teeth in as little as 3–5 months. Check with your orthodontist to see if this option is suitable for you.

WHAT TO PAY ATTENTION TO DURING BRACES TREATMENT?

  • Avoid acidic foods and drinks (sweets, cola, Fanta, soda, etc.)

  • Avoid sticky foods that adhere to teeth (gum, gummy candies, sugar, Turkish delight, etc.)

  • Avoid hard and shelled nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, etc.)

CAN THE DURATION OF BRACES TREATMENT BE SHORTENED?

The success of orthodontic treatment largely depends on the cooperation between the patient and the dentist. As long as proper care and attention are given during the braces treatment, it is possible to shorten the duration. Regular tooth brushing, consistent oral hygiene, avoiding prohibited foods, and strictly following the dentist’s instructions throughout the day can all contribute to a shorter treatment period.
